MARION WILLIAMS

Toward the end of her life, Marion Williams received much critical praise. Accolades like "America's greatest living singer," "among the greatest jazz singers," even the resplendent "greatest singer ever," prepared the way for a last year in which she became the first person to win a MacArthur "Genius" grant and the first gospel singer to receive a Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Honor. She had only a few months to enjoy the attention. But when she died on July 2nd, 1994, she was memorialized as one of America's greatest artists.
