Reggae's popularity in Africa has produced a New generation of African reggae stars such as Alpha Blondy, who created a unique style of African reggae based on the classic Jamaican version. Lucky Dube become South Africa's first homegrown reggae star with his soulful, melodic yet message-oriented recordings. Vocally he evokes the style of his hero, Peter Tosh, yet Lucky's voice ranges beyond this similarity with a power and phrasing all of his own. His music is eminently melodic, easily accessible, but always deep.
