Not long ago, Kevin Gordon became fascinated with Southern folk or "outsider" art, and these raw, mysterious and truthful works have affected his music. "I make direct connections between Mississippi Fred McDowell and Jimmy Lee Suddeth," says Gordon, speaking of the late traditional blues singer and the contemporary Alabama folk artist. Suddeth's work, largely done on plywood with his fingers and a palette of pigments mixed with mud, has been characterized as "quaintly primitive yet subtly sophisticated." It's a description equally apt for much of the music Gordon listens to and much of the music he makes. "Simple isn't necessarily simple," he says. "You can find as much grace in one of Jimmy's paintings as you can in a Rothko, or whatever." Similarly, he says, "I've always been drawn to music that was just honest and without pretension." |
